To be a make-up artist, no formal education is actually required.  Although there are various short courses that teach basic make-up application techniques as well as prosthetics for theatrical make-up, all you would really need is to have a lot of skill and experience in the industry.  As with being a cosmetologist, it is important to first get a degree in cosmetology and to undergo licensure procedures in order to be qualified to work as one.      Make-up artists are more likely to work under the supervision of a cosmetologist than vice versa.

Those starting a home hairdressing business today must work within the rules and regulations that govern cosmetology in their state.
